RECIPE... ADVICE

SALT-DOUGH

        300g grinded salt

        200g manitoba flor

        125g  water

1 teaspoon  tapestry liquid glue

Mix all the ingredients at room temperature, knead accurately for a little while until reaching a compact uniform ball. If you like you can colour the dough with tempera or, alternatively, you can model the rough dough and paint the handycraft. Bake at 50°C for as long as the size of your object requires (average times range between 1h and 20h for very large objects). After that you have to protect your handycrafts from humidity with a thin layer of varnish.

CORN-DOUGH

250g vinil glue

150g cornstarch

1 spoon vaseline oil

1 teaspoon lavander essence

Mix all the ingredients in an anti-adherent pot. Cook at a very law flame for 4/5 minutes to obtain an elastic and compact mixture, if it is sticky cook it a little more. Wait for it to cool and preserve the mixture in a plastic sheet or bag. If you like you can colour the dough with tempera or, alternatively, you can model the rough dough and paint the handycraft. The objects will dry in the air and will be humidity proof, besides they are quite unbreakable.

                                             SALT DOUGH

The salt must be grinded until it becomes extremely fine.Let it cool before use.

Put exactly 125 grams of water in the dough. If the dough appears too dry don't add any more water, instead moisten your hands.

Use only first class tempera to colour the dough, this will prevent excessive softness and will decrease the quantity used.

The colour of the salt dough fades while drying.

To rool out the dough, use a rigid plastic tube instead of a rolling-pin.

To model flowers,it is better to use freshly prepared dough. The dough becomes softer with time.

To obtain thin petals put the right quantity of dough between two sheets of oven-paper and press gently: you will avoid fingerprints.

In order to obtain a flower composition prepare the flower first and let them dry.

Afterwards put all the elements together using leaves modeled a short time before. In this way you'll prevent your composition from flattening.

Bake your objects into the oven at 50°C. During the first 30 minutes leave the door slightly open.

To stick the pieces together use a wet paintbrush.

Use aluminium-foil to cover the surface where you are going to work and put the reverse side up.

Let your objects cool before using the varnish.

Preserve all your handycrafts from humidity.

To make a wall composition stick all the elements together with a very strong mastic.

Carefully wash and dry your tools after use and store them in a box containing a small amount of corn flour to prevent rusting.

                                                      CORN DOUGH

The corn dough must be cooked in anti-adherent pot.You must be extremely carefull during this phase, because overcooking will affect the dough's elasticity. To check the time take out the dough  from the pot as many times as needed .

Only colour  the amount of dough that you will use immediately  you are sure to use  in a short time because of the limited durability of the coloured dough.

Corn dough dries at room temperature. It is resistant to humidity,so you don't have to varnish it.

Corn dough will darken upon drying. Therefore, when add tempera, try to obtain lighter colours.

The dough also reduces in volume,so you have to consider it in advance if precise dimension is required.

You can use corn dough to prepare different casts,(ie. leaf prints, bird feathers). When dried they can be easily used with fresh salt and corn dough.

The best material  to obtain casts, all though expensive and difficult to find, is dental printing

paste, due to its elastic properties.
